Obituary

Dale "Squirrel" D. Wegner, age 64, of New London, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 3, 2024. Born in New London on August 25, 1960, to the late Andrew and Lacy Wegner, Dale remained a lifelong resident of the town he loved.

Right out of high school, Dale began a 41-year career with the City of New London, retiring with pride in 2019. He was a familiar face around town, often seen in his signature wardrobe: a trusty t-shirt and city "blues," always ready for whatever work or adventure the day might bring. Most days, you could spot Dale on one of his many daily cruises around town, with his beloved dog Mickey riding shotgun, keeping an eye on things in New London, as if the town itself were part of his extended family. In recent years, Dale expanded his horizons by purchasing a Harley Davidson, which brought him even more joy as he cruised far beyond the streets he knew so well.

Dale found joy in life's simple pleasures, like hanging out at "the shop," catching up with friends over a cold drink at a local watering hole, or engaging in his unique form of therapy—splitting wood. A day rarely passed without a call or visit with close friend Bob (Sherry) Nelson, a testament to the loyalty and connection he valued deeply. When he wasn't enjoying these everyday moments, his favorite escape was Puerto Vallarta, a place he had visited regularly since the 1990s.

Dale is survived by his wife, Kelly; children, Dale (Lindsay) Wegner and Ashley (Jacob) Gagas; stepchildren, Becky (Nate) Barrette, Stephanie (Will) Welch, Brittany Buelow, and Brendan (Brittany) Kirchner. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Wyatt, Claire, Cameron, Bentley, Brylee, and Olivia. Additionally, Dale is survived by his siblings: Mike Wegner, Terry (Lois) Wegner, Carol (Ozzie) Radtke, and Susie (Larry) Laha, as well as his in-laws: David (Teri) Suprise, Mike Suprise, Sandy Beyer, and Jan (Jason) Suprise.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sheryl Wegner; son, Richard Wegner; brother, Pat Wegner; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Wegner.

Dale's love for his family, friends, and community, along with his quiet strength and signature wardrobe, will be missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Dale's life will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at Cruz Inn in New London, beginning at 11 a.m. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories in honor of his life
