Francis Ralph
Baker Jr.
March 26, 1941 – October 15, 2025
Francis Ralph Baker Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on October 15th, 2025 at the age of 84, in New London, WI. He was born on March 26, 1941, in Leona, WI, and lived a life rooted in faith, family and service.
Francis was shaped by the woods and the Word. Raised among the forest, lakes, and rivers of northern Wisconsin, he was the barefoot boy who knew every hidden fishing spot. A spiritual man from a young age, he came from a long line of ministers. His grandfather and uncles served as pastors and their faith planted deep roots in him, while he worked in the woods alongside his father, learning not just how to handle a saw or an axe but how to live with reverence for the world around him.
He lived his values in steady service. A dedicated member of his church, Francis taught Sunday school, served faithfully on the church council, and later, at the age of 74, was ordained as a minister. His belief in God was unshakable, and he lived his faith not just in words but in action.
Beyond the church walls, he poured the same care into his wider community. Francis was deeply involved in youth leadership, serving as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 59 for many years, and volunteering extensively with 4H. He was a patient mentor, a moral compass, and a constant presence for generations of young people, leading by example, and encouraging each child to walk their own path with integrity and wonder.
A consummate woodworker and lifelong DIYer, Francis built much of what surrounded him, from cabinets and tables to hand-crafted canoes. Later in life, he turned his attention to clocks and even musical instruments. His hands were always busy with tools. He approached building the same way he approached life, with care, wonder and love.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Lois, whom he married on September 15, 1962, and their children, Cheryl Baker and Francis Baker III. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Cody Baker, Paula Owen, Justine Leavitt, Leo Baker and Emily Woosly; as well as, sixteen great grandchildren who were a source of immense pride and joy. Francis is also survived by three sisters, Jean Panko, Mary Knighten and Ruth Wolford; and one brother, Bill Baker.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the devoted caregivers at St. Joseph's Residence and Moments Hospice, whose compassion and companionship in the last chapter of his life, brought comfort to Francis and to those who loved him.
