Joseph "Joe"
C. Van Straten
February 11, 1944 – February 8, 2023
Joseph C. Van Straten, age 78 of Shiocton, passed away suddenly the early morning on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Joe was born to Clark and Nona (Wachlin) Van Straten on February 11, 1944. He grew up a mischievous boy who liked to go fishing in the Wolf River and run around the farm in his home town of Shiocton. Joe served his country in the US Marines from 1964 until he was discharged in 1970. He then worked with Murphy's Construction Company, until he retired in 2005. Prior to his retirement, Joe bought a farmhouse just outside of Shiocton, the town where he grew up. This is where Joe pursued his true passion of running a small hobby farm, which he continued doing until the day he passed. In 2012, Joe met his fiancé, Barbara Brauer. Together, they spent their spare time volunteering at the local Salvation Army. Joe and Barb shared many interests, but most importantly, they shared the love of dancing. Along with Barb's family, they have developed a friendship with a group of people who share the same joy of dancing. Along with farming and dancing, Joe looked forward to spending time with his dog Blue and taking him on daily walks. Joe also loved his children and was always there to help when they needed him. Joe always stayed in touch with his children. He would never let too much time pass between phone calls and pop-in visits. Every conversation ended with 'I love you'.
Joe is survived by his fiancé, Barbara Bauer; his children, Andee Van Straten, Heather (Richard) Dobbs, Jeremy Van Straten and Jason Van Straten; his granddaughter, Grace Van Straten; his siblings, Jaqulyne (Gary) Waterstradt, Tom (Janice) Van Straten, Richard (Kathy) Van Straten, John (Lucy) Van Straten and Jane (David) Reinke. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews, their children and their children's children.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Nona Van Straten; infant sister, Janice; sister, Jeanne Vander Zanden; brother, Gary Van Straten and Barbara's son, Kelly Brauer.
The funeral services for Joe will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Seymour. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
Joe will be sincerely missed by all who knew and loved him.
