Obituary

Judith Lynne Gustin, 77, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, known for her unwavering faith and love for her family, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Judy, one of Emil and Esther (Stevens) Viergutz’s twelve children, was born in Medford, Wisconsin on November 7, 1948. She married Donald Gustin on September 9, 1967. They enjoyed almost 47 years together before his passing on July 9, 2014.

Judy enjoyed knitting, crocheting and gardening. She also enjoyed baking, working on puzzles and looking for Tim. She loved to sit on her front porch, play on her tablet, and visit with her neighbors. Above all, her greatest joy was her family. She always had her kitchen stocked with Ovaltine chocolate milk, cereal, and sweet treats for the grandkids. She was a willing teacher to anyone who wanted to learn from her – whether that be knitting, decorating cakes, or making dumplings. She was full of love and wit and sass. Grandma “Great” was one of the greatest! Her love will forever be a part of us, guiding us.

Judy is survived by her children, Dawn (Murphy) Hays, Carrie (John) Samson, Thomas (Stephanie) Gustin, Tim Gustin, and Shannon Granato (her honorary son); twelve grandchildren, Alissa, Haili, Derek, Emily, Michael, Alize, NaLee, Eli, Michaela, Makenzie, Makenna, and Alexis; along with five great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her siblings, Marianne Zarling, Milt (Kay) Viergutz, Florine (Dean) Goulet, Janice Krueger, Donald Viergutz, Julie (Richard) Birkholz, and John (Karen) Benckeser; sisters-in-law, Lisa Viergutz and Sandy Pond; brother-in-law, Dick Bergman; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Emil Viergutz and Esther & Donald Clark; her husband, Donald Gustin; her son, Bill Gustin; her brothers, Robert Viergutz, Jerry Viergutz, and Ralph Viergutz; and her sisters, Gloria Knippel and Janet Bergman.

The family would like to thank KC Schuler and the medical staff at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Appleton, the neighbors who cared for Mom, especially Shannon, Mike and Doug, as well as the Meals on Wheels staff who brought a smile to her face when they delivered her meals.

The Funeral Service for Judy will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London, with Rev. Kevin Dembinski officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Judy will be laid to rest in Floral Hill Cemetery alongside her husband.
