Karen Van Straten's Memorial Service Video

Karen M. Van Straten, age 77 of Shiocton, died on November 30, 2022, the result of declining health.  Karen was a "special" daughter, born on July 21, 1945 to Aloysius and Cecilia (Dietzler) Van Straten. Karen spent most of her life living in Shiocton. She was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, the Shiocton Senior Citizens, and the American Legion Auxiliary.  She graduated from Shiocton Public Schools, and as an adult was recognized as "fan of the year", rarely missing any school functions, or those of her church or community.  Just a few years ago, she was even honored by being named "Shiocton's Cabbage Chuck Queen".  Karen retired from Valley Packaging Industries, just over two years ago.  Karen liked walking the streets of Shiocton, often sitting to rest on a bench downtown, or on the seat of her walker.  She was often seen drinking a soda at one of the town's bars, while visiting with the people there.  She liked to do simple activity books, like math or writing.  Karen liked to talk on the telephone, calling family and friends often.  This last year, Karen got attached to a large butterfly popper, spending hours pushing the colorful dots.

Karen is survived by her brothers, Russell, Carl (Linda) and Daniel (Ervida) and her sister, Mary Van Kirk and their families.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Roger (Gerry), Gerald (Arlene), Donald (Marvella) and Leonard "Lenny"; sisters, Joyce and Alice; sister-in-law, Gerri (Mrs. Russell) and brother-in-law, Robert Van Kirk.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Shiocton with Fr. Michael Thiel officiating.  Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.  Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Clarity Care, New London and ThedaCare Hospice for all the love and care given to Karen.
