Obituary

Maureen Marie Schoofs passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Madison. She was born on November 17, 1930 in Wausau, Wisconsin. Her parents were Edward A. and Bernice M. (Boehm) McCarthy. The family moved to Milwaukee in 1941 and Maureen graduated from St. John’s Cathedral High School in 1948. After graduation, she was employed in the office of Robert W. Baird. Maureen married John G. Schoofs on August 25, 1951 and they had six children. Her family kept her busy and she was a proud stay-at-home mom, volunteering for the Fort Atkinson Hospital Auxiliary, at her children’s schools, and at St. Vincent de Paul in Fort Atkinson. After John retired, they volunteered together at St. Coletta Greenhouse, Jefferson, delivering Meals on Wheels and at St. Vincent de Paul, Lake Mills.

Maureen is survived by their children Jean (James) Elvekrog of Waunakee, Robert (Mary) of Glenwood Springs, CO, Father Phillip of Hortonville, Ann (Daniel) Hundt of Lake Mills, and Catherine (William) Bruhn of Brookfield. She is further survived by her eight grandchildren, Anne Marie (Timothy) Jarmuz, Margaret Elvekrog, John R. (Mackenzie Kuhn) Schoofs, Sarah (Daryl Gasca) Schoofs, Karl (Rachel) Hundt, Matthew Hundt, Ellen Bruhn, and Gretchen Bruhn; three great grandchildren, Clare Jarmuz, Bridget Jarmuz, and Luca Schoofs Gasca; and her brother, Timothy (Chong) McCarthy of Oak Harbor, WA. She is further survived by several cousins.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John (April 20, 2016) and an infant daughter, Mary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 107 N. Olk Street, Hortonville, Wisconsin by Rev. Phillip Schoofs. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass. Private burial services will take place later in the day at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Cemetery, Johnson Creek, Wisconsin.

Special thanks to Kathy and the residents at Cannery Row Apartments for welcoming Mom into their community; the staff and all at Sienna Crest Waunakee for their love and support; and Dr. Trent Thompson, Father Pat Norris, OP, and all staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and Hospice for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers or memorials, please consider sharing your time in a way you can touch the lives of others.
