Rey Wentworth

March 18th, 2017 - August 18th, 2025

Today we say goodbye to Rey Padme Skywalker Wentworth.

The loss of Rey is felt deeply by her human parents, Laura and David Wentworth of Appleton. She will also be terribly missed by her human sister, Eloise, and her fur sister, Leia. She further leaves behind two amazing grandparents, Jon and Pam Hagen. She is preceded in death by her Great Aunt Judy, who may have only met her a few times, but we know is going to help her find the way, and her fur brother Moose. We hold on to hope that Rey and Moose are frolicking around the Rainbow Bridge as only bulldogs can do.

Rey was born in Alabama on March 18th, 2017 with one purpose in life - to breed bulldog puppies. As an Olde English Bulldogge, her puppies were desirable and expensive, but the breeders seemed to forget about the sweet and gentle mama dog who was their payday. Rey was emaciated, undersocialized, and was apparently named "Belle”. She wasn't aware of that, and her story of survival needed a name fit for a warrior; therefore, we chose Rey.

She came into our lives during Covid in April of 2020. Laura was unsupervised on the internet and got pulled into dog rescue posts, despite the already busy household they had. She decided to submit an adoption application when she came across a different bulldog. Much to her surprise, she got a call from the rescue that same night that they were approved to adopt. After getting a bit more information on the other bulldog, Laura determined that he was not a good fit for her other dogs, but the rescuer then sent a picture of Rey, with her sad looking eyes and a bully face that was irresistible. Time to tell Dave what she had done and ask for forgiveness (again!)

In true Dave fashion, he entertained the idea and Rey came over for a visit. She knew who she had to win over, and the rest is history. She has enjoyed a life of luxury with a King bed that she thinks is all her own, plenty of couches to nap on, and an overabundance of braunschweiger from Grandpa Jon. When he would skimp on the number of treats, she never hesitated to let him know that he needed to learn how to count. In the beginning, she didn't even know how to take a treat, and thought every movement was going to end in her being struck, so hopefully others can remember this when they see those cute bully puppies from the breeders. They come from a mama, who is hopefully loved and cared for better than Rey was. Thankfully, after a while Rey settled in, never missed a meal, and found her place in the chaos. If there wasn't space for her, she just made space, as only a bulldog can.

Rey's life was cut short by an aggressive cancer, and we are deeply grateful for Dr. Ewing at Heritage Animal Hospital for her kindness these past few weeks. While we are heartbroken at the abrupt diagnosis and decline of our sweet Rey, we take solace in recognizing that her transition to the Rainbow Bridge has opened up our home to consider saving another dog, just like her, when our hearts are ready. Not yet though, Rey Rey. #adoptdontshop

Rey, thanks for loving us as much as we've loved you. We are not quite sure what we are going to do without the need to fight for our spot in bed every night, but I know you'll send us another sweet soul who needs a warm place to land when the time is right. We will never stop talking about your silly antics, your loud snoring, and your little tap dance you used to do at mealtime.

May the force be with you, Rey. We love you. For always and forever. We hope to see you again someday. Love, Mom, Dad, Eloise, and Leia.
