Obituary

Richard David Peterson, 91, passed away at Marshfield Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Richard was born on May 8, 1934, the eldest of two, to the late William and Marion Peterson, in New London, Wisconsin.

Richard achieved much in his younger years. He was the starting quarterback of the New London Bulldogs in his freshman year, and played as the forward on the Bulldog basketball team. As an avid outdoorsman, he spent many days making memories either on or beside the Wolf River, the river which practically ran through Richard's veins.

Richard's grandmother served as New London's Postmaster. A certain clout came with that position, so she helped Richard get the job as grounds keeper at Floral Hill Cemetery when he was a teenager. He had one of the first gas lawn mowers in town. He also worked a job at Bordens.

After high school, Richard had an opportunity to attend college on a sports scholarship. Despite earning that opportunity, he chose to serve his country in the United States Navy. Richard proudly served during the Korean War. He served on USS Philippine Sea (CVA-47), an Essex class aircraft carrier. His position was a hazardous one, running the steam catapult.

Richard married his wife, Dorothy Malliet, while on leave, on December 31, 1954, never having time for even a wedding reception, let alone a honeymoon. On their 50th wedding anniversary, they enjoyed the reception they never got, right down to a highly polished big band!

Richard served as a firefighter for the Appleton Fire Department, reaching the rank of Captain of Station #1. His specialty was design and development of fire apparatus. From firefighting, Richard was invited to join Wisconsin Bell to design and launch a new fleet.

In retirement, Richard and Dorothy built and settled in the Eagle River Area on Cranberry Lake. Their primary hobbies were maintaining the beautiful natural habitat of their little piece of the charming Wisconsin Northwoods. Richard spent considerable amounts to protect and preserve the oak woodlands around their home.

Those left to cherish Richard's memory are; his wife of nearly 71 years, Dorothy; their daughter, Judy (and her special friend, Tom), their son, David (and his wife, Kimberly); their grandson, John (and his wife, Lindsay and son, Liam), and grandsons, Karl and Kyle.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marion; and a young brother, William John; as well as many, many friends.

Full military honors will be held graveside in Floral Hill Cemetery on May 8, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.. Per Richard's wishes, there will be no funeral ceremony. Those wishing to honor Richard's memory are asked to make a donation to the Shriners Children's Hospital. Shriners Children's Hospital .
